We're running for a cause, join us!
We’re rallying behind Ben’s chosen charity, the Lung Foundation Australia, as he helped to care for his Aunty last year who was diagnosed with small cell lung cancer.
We would love if you could offer your support as Ben and Darren take on the 12km and I take on the 21.5km each for this great cause.
Please read more about the ‘reason’ behind our runs below:
🏃♂️ Ben:
The Lung Foundation is the only charity and leading peak body of its kind in Australia that funds life changing research and delivers support services to those diagnosed with lung disease or lung cancer. The reason I am running for this organisation is because my own family have felt the impact of lung cancer firsthand. Seeing a loved one struggle with breathing, go through treatment and the emotional toll of such a diagnosis was incredibly challenging. As such, this cause is deeply personal to me therefore I want to do my part to raise awareness, fund vital research and support those facing similar battles.
🏃♂️ Darren:
In September 2023, when I was playing volleyball, I suffered a traumatic knee injury. In my left knee I tore my ACL, PCL and MCL, I also had a bucket handle meniscus tear and shattered bones. My first surgery was an open knee surgery in October 2023 and second surgery was an arthroscopic left knee manipulation surgery in January 2024. I was in a wheelchair and crutches for 7 months before I had to re-learn how to walk again and be able to bend my knee again. I previously ran in the HBF Run for a Reason in 2023, so I have set myself the goal to be able to run and participate in the HBF Run for a Reason this year and attempt to beat my previous time in 2023. The recovery process has been long, painful and still ongoing, however I’m glad that I am at the point of my rehabilitation and recovery to be able to be active again.
🏃♀️ Sarah:
Since turning the ripe age of 24, I’ve suddenly become aware of my own mortality and as a result have decided to set a fitness goal for myself each year. My Dad also passed away when I was eight due to health complications, so taking caring of my health and fitness is a high priority for me. Last year I ran in the 12km City to Surf, and this year I want to test my limits and train to complete the 21.5km half marathon with a goal of sub 2 hours. I’m super glad that I can support Ben’s charity at the same time and look forward to meeting up with Darren and Ben after the race to see how they went.
You can support us by either contributing a donation to the Lung Foundation or just sharing some kind words and cheering us on in the lead up to the event!
