How you're making an impact
In Australia, more than 15,122 people will be diagnosed with lung cancer this year — that’s 41 every day. Almost 85% will be diagnosed at a late stage, making it our country’s most devastating cancer. But together, we are making progress. The National Lung Cancer Screening Program will support the early detection of lung cancer through targeted lung cancer screening for asymptomatic high-risk individuals. Below are also some examples of how fundraising for Shine a Light, funds lung cancer research developments through Lung Foundation Australia's Hope Research Fund.
Dr. Jessica Nash - Lung Cancer Clinical Quality Data Platform (LUCAP)
Thanks to this research, patients can be diagnosed and treated faster, improving their chances of recovery and reducing stress during an already difficult time.
Dr Nash shared that talking with patients and their loved ones during focus groups opened her eyes to the patient experience, and how stigma and a lack of information affect people with lung cancer. Many patients had no idea what good care looked like, making it harder to ask for help or push for timely treatment. Her research is helping give patients the knowledge and systems they need to receive the care they deserve.
A/Prof Malinda Itchins - AURORA Cohort Study – Exploring Clinical and Molecular Biomarkers of Treatment Performance in ROS1+ NSCLC
This research could mean fewer treatments stopping controlling the cancer earlier, fewer hospital visits, and longer, healthier lives for people with ROS1+ lung cancer.
Backing Breakthroughs
Thanks to the money raised through the generosity of our community, Lung Foundation Australia provides seed funds to some of the best and brightest researchers. These grants help drive a deeper understanding of lung cancer and build momentum for real, lasting change.
With your support, research is helping to discover faster ways to diagnose lung cancer, more effective treatments to give families more precious time — and ultimately, a cure.
“We’re entering an exciting era for targeted lung cancer therapies, but we must understand why these treatments stop working. This research will help us stay one step ahead and give patients more time and a better quality of life.”
- A/Prof Malinda Itchins
Your Light, Your Story

I am living with lung cancer

I am showing support for the lung cancer community

I am remembering a loved one
Where there is light, there is hope.
This year, more than 15,000 Australian families will be impacted by lung cancer — our nation’s biggest cancer killer. Yet funding remains critically low. For 15 years, Shine a Light on Lung Cancer has raised vital funds for ground-breaking research and practical support.
Every dollar builds a brighter future for those diagnosed.

What do I do if I'd like to host a Shine a Light walk event in my local community?
We would love to support our interested community hosts in putting on an event in their community. Complete the Expression of Interest Form and tick Volunteering to host a walk in my community, and our team will be in touch.
What are the shine a light lanterns and how do I get one?
The Shine a Light lanterns reflect different meanings with each of the three colours.
- Purple: I am remembering a loved one
- Orange: I am living with lung cancer
- Green: I am supporting the lung cancer community
When you register for an event, you will be asked which lantern colour you are registering for. When you raise $100 on your personal fundraising page you will receive your lantern in the post, along with a Lung Foundation Australia T-shirt.
We understand that people may fall under multiple colours, and we encourage the registrant to choose the colour that they feel they connect with the most in relation to the lantern meanings.
Lanterns are reserved for registrants only, with limited availability at events.
How do I receive my lantern and T-shirt for Shine a Light on Lung Cancer?
It is important to register for your event so we can ensure we have enough lanterns and T-shirts for all particpants. Registrants who raise $100 or more by cut off date of 19th October 2025, will receive a lantern and T-shirt. We will post your T-shirt and lantern to your registered address. We set this date to ensure that your package arrives by the time of your registered walk. We will try our best to have your package arrive in time but we can't guarantee this with postage.
