Walking for Change | Shining a Light on Lung Cancer

This year, my stepdad Jeff was diagnosed with lung cancer — a moment that has deeply affected our entire family. Jeff has been a huge part of my life, and now it’s my turn to give back. I want to channel that emotion into something positive, something that might help others and bring hope to families walking a similar path.

Throughout the month of November, I’ll be walking every single day, finishing the month with a 22km walk from Durack to Darwin. It’s a personal challenge — one that will push me mentally and physically — but it’s nothing compared to the strength and resilience shown by those facing lung cancer.

Lung cancer is Australia’s biggest cancer killer, but research offers real hope. Every dollar raised helps fund groundbreaking research through Lung Foundation Australia, supporting prevention, management, and ultimately, a cure.

Nearly There — Help Me Reach $10K

With only 12 days left in November, we’re closing in on the end of this year’s Lung Cancer Fundraiser — and what a journey it’s been so far.

 

After starting the month a little behind due to sickness, I’m ramping things up to finish strong — building towards a 25km walk on the 29th of November to close it out. To date, we’ve walked 93km this month across three different states, with a goal to push past 200km before the finish line.

 

We’ve raised an incredible $7,560 so far — just $2,440 shy of our $10K goal. If you can, please dig deep and help me get there. Every dollar goes directly towards the Lung Foundation Australia, giving hope to families — like ours — who are fighting the battle against lung cancer.

 

This fundraiser has never been about the kilometres or the numbers — it’s about dedicating a little bit of time and effort to something greater than ourselves, and walking in support of those facing far tougher journeys.

Tomorrow marks the start of a journey that means a lot to me and my family.

This morning a good mate shared some encouraging words, and it made me reflect on the past 12 months. Three back surgeries in a year was tough — but I promised myself I'd come out of it stronger mentally. I’ve battled mental health challenges over the years (and still do), but I’m working every day to be better for myself and, most importantly, for my family. I also recently made the decision to give up alcohol to stay focused on becoming the best version of myself. That choice has opened the door to this next challenge — stepping outside my comfort zone both mentally and physically, and supporting a cause close to our hearts as our family walks through the reality of cancer. This fundraiser isn’t about me. Yes, I’m pushing my body and mind — 5 months post-spinal fusion I thought 5–10km walks would be my limit, but here we are doing 20km and pushing beyond. But the real purpose is to walk for those who are fighting far bigger battles, and to hopefully inspire even one person to make a positive change — whether that’s getting moving, asking for help, or taking a hard step in the right direction. There is always someone doing it tougher. If this journey can help even one person, that means everything. November — we walk. For Jeff. For families facing lung cancer. For hope.

Well we are totally stoked we have reached our goal 3 times over! With an initial target of 1k, then 2k, onto 5k we have surpassed all of them. I’m so thankful and grateful for each and every donation to date. With a completion date of end of November let’s see where we can get this number too. This is for every family that has, is or will be affected by Lung Cancer!
